BIM is the acronym of “Building Information Modelling” and it’s defined by the National Institutes of Building Science as the “digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of an object”. In the MEP (Mechanical – Electrical – Plumbing) System design the BIM modelling allows greater efficiency given by the ease of dialogue and integration with all the IT tools concerning the sizing and positioning of the systems, from modelling to the bill of quantity, the preparation of which is practically instantaneous and perfectly coherent with the project. The main advantages of BIM technology are greater efficiency and productivity, fewer errors, less dead times, lower costs, greater interoperability, maximum information sharing and more accurate control of the project. Unlike previous assisted drawing software, in which only graphic data could be entered, with BIM design it’s possible to add also the specific technical attributes relating to each discipline. For example, in the electrical BIM design, it’s possible to model a lighting fixture as an object, included the related data sheet and technical characteristics, with specific tools it’s possible also to produce the lighting calculation inside the model. This is very close to the reality, because it’s included all the technical characteristics of the environment and the systems provided inside it, like dimensions, materials, sizes shared with all the other disciplines included in the project. This instrument facilitates the design, but also and in particular the construction phase providing as output a design with accurate and particularly reliable information. The advantages of this design method aren’t finalized only with the construction phase, but they are evident also during the monitoring and maintenance phases. DRISALDI ASSOCIATI works in BIM, in particular for MEP (Mechanical – Electrical – Plumbing) Systems, using Autodesk Revit software, improved also with specific tools for the lighting calculation and graphical and table output. We are a specialized team that can work in BIM with all the required structures, hardware and software, specifically created to meet the new market demands.
